Lady Taverners' Finals Day 2012
Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr from Swansea were victorious at the Lady Taverners Finals day on Tuesday the 24th of April at the SWALEC Stadium having beaten Dyffryn Tâf school from Carmarthenshire by 40 runs in the final. Gwyr batted first and scored 66-7 off their allocation of 10 overs and then restricted Dyffryn Tâf to 45-6 in their 10 overs. Gwyr and Dyffryn Tâf were joined by Hawarden High School from Flintshire, Cefn Saeson School, Neath and Sandfields School, Port Talbot at the finals day. They have now secured their place at the Lady Taverners Girls Indoor National Finals Day, to be held at Lords Cricket Ground, in early May. They will fly the flag for Wales against sides from all four regions of England at the National Finals.
Lady Taverners is a funding arm of the the Lords Taverners group, and is pleased to support the development of grass roots girls cricket across the UK. The indoor competitions, open to all schools across Wales, are played in an indoor sports hall with a soft ‘incrediball’ in teams of 8. This leads on to the outdoor club competition, to be held in July.
All fixtures, results and tables are available on the play-cricket website (see link)
Report of a Survey of Junior League Cricket In Wales
By Ted Tipper for Cricket Wales
Introduction
This is the first full survey to be carried out of the Junior Leagues in Wales. The Leagues involved, along with their abbreviations used in the report, are as follows:
Cardiff & Vale Junior Cricket League – C&V
Eryri Junior Cricket League – Eryri
Mid Glamorgan Junior Cricket League – MG
Monmouthshire Building Society Youth Cricket League – MBS
North East Wales Junior Cricket League – NEW
Pembroke Junior Cricket League – Pemb
South Wales Junior Cricket League – SWJC
West Wales Cricket Club Conference Junior Cricket League – WWCC
Format of Leagues
• All the Leagues play at U11, U13 and U15 except SWJC which plays at U12, 14 and U16. (It also plays at U11 but, for the purposes of the survey, its U12/14/16 leagues have been used to compare with the U11/13/15 of the other Leagues.) Most Leagues also run U10 sections but some of these are softball, while others run divisions in their U11 leagues to cater for the U9/10s, so these have not been specifically included in the survey.
• It seems that, while all Leagues play in pairs at U11, they play 20-over at U13 and U15. The exception is MBS which runs pairs and 20-over divisions at U13.
• All Leagues start at the beginning of May and most go on to the end of the school term although MBS and MG go on to the end of August.
• The following have set days to play matches – C&V, Mid Glam, NEW, Pembroke, SWJC
• The following allow teams to arrange fixtures mutually within a basic w/c framework – Eryri, MBS, WWCC.
• The following allow for rearrangement of fixtures – C&V, Eryri, Mid Glam, MBS,
The following don’t allow for rearrangement of fixtures – SWJC (except in certain circumstances)
The following did not specify – NEW, Pemb, WWCC
Other Competitions
• The following have play-off finals – C & V, NEW, SWJC
• The following run separate knockout competitions – Eryri, MBS, SWJC
Challenges Faced by the Leagues (Contributed by the League Organisers)
• The weather.
• Lack of grounds and ground availability.
• Impact of players taking holidays throughout the season in addition to examinations, work experience, school outings and events which are increasingly affecting U15/16 leagues in particular.
• Recruitment of coaches and managers.
• Girls’ participation and retention.
• Distances travelled (in some Leagues) especially for mid-week matches.
• Increased competition from other sports with football and rugby encroaching further into cricket season.
• The low profile of cricket on terrestrial television and the failure of Glamorgan to connect effectively with the younger audience.
• Parental focus on winning trophies rather than player development.
• Commitments with senior sides affecting availability of the older players.
• Teams dropping out of League or conceding individual matches due to lack of players; squads are decreasing in size.
• Lack of support from Clubs who don’t support youth sections and then ‘poach’ the better players from those that do.
Analysis of Figures
Details were sought to identify the numbers of junior teams across Wales and whether any patterns of participation could be established. The figures can be found in the Appendix but here is a summary of the findings:
• In 2011, there were 157 clubs in Wales running 449 junior teams with an average of almost three teams per club. However, the number of teams per club ranges from 2.0 in WWCC to 3.7 in C&V.
• The total number of teams in 2011 drops through the age groups by 16%, between U11 and U13, and by a further 13%, between U13 and U15.
• The changes in the numbers of teams in Wales over the last six years is as follows:
2005-8 2008-11
Under 11 +15% +7%
Under 13 +11% No Change
Under 15 +14% -6%
These clearly indicate a steady increase at all ages from 2005-2008 but, over the last three years, a more modest increase at U11, stagnation at U13 and decline at U15. In the individual Leagues there have been overall increases in team numbers in some, declines in others and some have remained about the same.
• The second table analyses the amount of games players actually play. The figure of eight or more was selected as this represents just once a fortnight over the four summer months. Below that, it was felt, they would not be receiving a meaningful experience. Even so this is well below the number of competitive opportunities they experience in other sports. Across Wales only 44% of teams reach this figure and, most worryingly, 31% at U11. (It is accepted that players may play other matches, such as cup or in other age-groups, but these are unlikely to have a significant impact on these figures.)
Summary and Conclusion
The intention of carrying out the survey was to create awareness as to how individual Leagues operate and how healthy they are in terms of delivering the experience of match cricket to young people. It was not designed to develop an ‘ideal’ template but it is hoped that Leagues will look at how they operate in the light of the findings and, perhaps, enquire of each other about the way they do things.
However, it is clear that junior cricket is in a state of flux. While participation at U11 seems to be still increasing, albeit at slower rate, it has reached a plateau at U13 and is declining at U15. What is even more concerning is the actual number of matches these teams play. It is clear from the ‘Challenges’ section above that the Leagues are aware of many reasons for these trends.
It is clearly a challenge for us all to arrest the apparent decline in the number of young people playing cricket across Wales as well increasing the number of opportunities they have to play the game competitively.
It is not the role of this report to make any recommendations. However, it is hoped the Leagues themselves will find it useful and it will assist Cricket Wales in its future planning.
Ted Tipper
November 2011
[Note: The survey was carried out through a simple survey of League Organisers backed up by a review of their websites for further details. I would like to thank them for their prompt and supportive response.]
